A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning
這是John Donne在遠行前寫給他老婆的告別辭，在古代出遠門不是安全且方便的事，
可能去一趟就會天人永隔，所以John Donne才會寫這麼一首詩，來安慰老婆同時保證他愛情的堅貞不移。
詩人用平凡的圓規來形容不平凡的堅定愛情。
戀人仿如圓規的兩腳，而她是圓規的中心腳，也是他滿溢的愛的中心。
無論他在身旁或暫離，他的心總是和她相連，兩人攜手畫出屬於他們的圓，走出屬於他們的人生。
他對她說：
『是你才讓我的世界圓滿，讓我的人生旅途不害怕終點，因為最後一定會回到你最初的懷抱。』
If they be two, they are two so
As stiff twin compasses are two;
Thy soul, the fixed root, makes no show
To move, but doth, if thí other do.
And though it in the center sit,
Yet when the other far doth roam,
It leans and hearkens after it,
And grows erect, as that comes home.
Such wilt thou be to me, who must,
Like thí other foot, obliquely run;
Thy firmness make my circle just,
And makes me end where I begun.
哪怕靈魂一分爲二，它也牢固
如圓規的兩只尖足；
你的靈魂是固定的針腳，毫無動的跡象，若非隨同另一個的步調。
它雖坐定中央，一旦另一個稍稍遠足，
它就傾身而聽，腳步歸來時，又頃刻直立。
對我，你正是如此，我就象另一只規腳，傾斜著運轉；
唯有你的堅定，我才畫得出終點回到起點的，圓周。
